Parts list
The maintenance kit contains the following items:
- Fusing assembly
- (6) Pickup/separation rollers
- Transfer roller assembly
- Transfer roller clip
- Duplex D-roller (for optional duplex unit)
- Pair of gloves (for replacing transfer roller)
- Instructions
CAUTION: Remove the fusing assembly spacing brackets before installing the fusing assembly. Failure to remove the spacing brackets may cause damage to the HP LaserJet IIISi printer when in operation.
When the printer has printed 200,000 pages, the "User Maintenance" message is displayed in place of the "00 PCL Ready" (or "00 PS Ready") message. Parts described in this section must be replaced to keep the printer at optimal performance. After completing maintenance, clear the message (see "Clearing the Maintenance and Service Message" in this document) and continue printing.
The parts replaced are:
- Fusing assembly
- Transfer roller and clip
- Pickup and separation rollers
- Duplex pickup roller (if duplex unit is installed)
WARNING: Failure to turn off and unplug the printer before replacing parts, may result in personal injury or damage to the printer. After turning the power OFF and unplugging the printer, allow it to cool for 30 minutes before replacing the parts.
NOTE: Before beginning the maintenance procedures, read through the whole procedure first.
Unless specifically noted, replacement is the reverse of removal. Carefully observe the position and alignment of the part that is being removed.
Use the gloves provided when replacing the transfer roller. To ensure optimal performance, do not touch the roller without gloves.
The terms "right" and "left" that are used in these procedures assume that one is standing in front of the printer.
Fusing assembly removal and replacement
The fusing assembly is located inside the printer at the rear, below the toner cartridge. A screwdriver is necessary to perform this procedure. Follow the steps below to replace the fusing assembly:
WARNING: The fusing area becomes HOT when the printer is powered on. Turn the printer off, unplug the power cord, and allow the fusing assembly to cool for 30 minutes before attempting to remove.
Removal
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Remove the paper trays.
- Open the printer top cover by pressing the top release button.
- Remove the toner cartridge and store out of direct light.
- Allow the assembly to cool for 30 minutes before attempting to remove.
- Loosen the four screws attaching the fusing assembly to the printer with a screwdriver; then use your fingers to remove them. (These screws appear as tall posts on each corner of the fusing assembly.)
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the black plastic paper sensor flag above the fuser's right rear corner. If the flag cannot move freely, it will produce a false 13.x PAPER JAM message when the printer is turned on again, or paper will jam when it tries to feed the first sheet of paper after being powered on.
- Slide the fusing assembly to the left and then up and out. Lift the fusing assembly toward the front of the printer to avoid the toner cartridge holder.
- Lower the new fusing assembly into place against the left side of the printer; then slide it to the right until the electrical connector is firmly inserted into the socket at the right side. (The slots on the underside of the fusing assembly fit into metal tabs on the plate on which the fusing assembly rests; they help to guide the assembly into place.) Be sure that the electrical connector is firmly seated and that the paper sensor flag is able to move back and forth freely.
- Replace the screws by first, turning them with your fingers and then tightening them with the screwdriver.
- Replace the toner cartridge and close the top cover.
Transfer roller and clip
The transfer roller is the black sponge-rubber roller located inside the printer just to the front of the black plastic paper feed guide. Remove and replace the transfer roller and clip as follows:
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Remove the paper trays.
- Open the printer top cover by pressing the top release button.
- Remove the light-blue plastic retaining clip, which holds the right end of the roller in place, by pulling up on its rearmost edge. Discard the clip.
- Hold the transfer roller in place and slide the black bushing to the right so that it separates from the roller's shaft. For replacement, observe and remember how the guide pins fit into the slots in the left socket.
- Remove the transfer roller by lifting its right end up and out. Discard the used roller.
- Use the gloves provided in the maintenance kit.
- Slide the left end of the new roller into the left end socket, being careful that the guide pins fit into the slots.
- While raising the right end of the roller up slightly, push the bushing on the right end socket to the right. Lower the roller into place and slide the right end socket to the left and over the transfer roller's metal shaft.
- Install the new, light blue plastic retaining clip, which holds the right end plastic socket in place. If the roller has been properly installed, the clip should fit easily over the shaft, and the transfer roller should not move from side to side.
- Make sure the transfer roller is correctly seated by rotating it back and forth while watching the gear on the left. Both the gear and the transfer roller should turn freely.
- Remove the gloves.
- Close the top cover.
Pickup and separation rollers
Three pickup and separation rollers are located in the back of the upper and lower paper tray slots. (There are six pickup and separation rollers - three for each slot.) The six rollers are identical.
To remove and replace, follow the steps below:
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Remove both paper trays.
- Remove each roller by pinching the light blue, plastic retaining clip at the end of the roller and sliding off its shaft. (It may be easier to pinch the clip with the left hand and use the right index finger to slide the roller to the left.) Rotate the roller for easy access to the clip.
- Discard the used rollers.
- Slide each new roller over its shaft and snap it into place. The light blue, plastic clip will click into place when the roller is firmly seated.
- To check the installation, release the clip and try to pull the roller off the shaft; it should not come off.
- Reinstall the paper trays.
Duplex pickup replacement
If the optional duplex unit is installed, the duplex pickup roller should be replaced at the same time as the pickup and separation rollers.
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Remove both paper trays.
- Locate the duplex pickup roller through the lower paper tray slot.
- Use the left hand to lift the plate above the roller and raise the roller off the bottom of the printer. With the right hand, pinch the ends of the roller and slide it off to the right. (It may help to push the roller to the right with the fingers of your left hand.)
- Examine how the duplex pickup roller is keyed on the shaft. The shaft has two posts (one post of which is longer than the other). There are corresponding slots on either side of the hole through the duplex pickup roller.
- Slide the roller onto the shaft, aligning the slots with the post on the shaft.
- Slide the roller to the left until the pickup roller clicks into place.
NOTE: After the fuser has been replaced and the printer has been turned on again, the message "50 service error" may appear in the display. This usually indicates the printer was not turned off long enough before the fuser was replaced. Turn the printer off again for 30 minutes. This should clear the error message. If the problem persists, review the instructions for this message in the Printer User's Reference Manual.
Clearing the maintenance and service message
The "User Maintenance" message is displayed in place of the "00 PCL Ready" (or "00 PS Ready") message when the printer has printed 200,000 pages. After the preceding replacement procedures, clear the display message as follows:
- Press the ONLINE key, if necessary, to take the printer offline.
- Hold down the MENU key until PCL CONFIG MENU appears, quickly followed by the SYS=HP-PCL* message. (If the printer is currently configured for PostScript (R), PS CONFIG MENU, quickly followed by the SYS=POSTSCRIPT* message will be displayed.)
- Press (do not hold) the MENU key several times to scroll through the Configuration Menu selections until the SERVICE MSG=ON* appears.
- Press the + (plus) or - (minus) key to change the message to SERVICE MSG=OFF.
- Press the ENTER/RESET Menu key to turn the message off. An asterisk (*) appears after the selection.
- Return the printer to its online state.
